LYNDHURST, N.J.– Sarah Madonna belted out "Proud to Be an American" as hundreds of students gathered Friday morning in front of Lyndhurst High School for a 9/11 memorial service.

The school's lawn was adorned with 2,977 small American flags, each with an attached card naming each victim of the terrorist attacks 15 years ago.

It was part of a project started by members of LHS's Student Government , parent Roseann Spagnuolo Almeida said.

Staff, neighbors and first responders were on hand for the ceremony, and the high school chorus and band performed.

"Amen to this wonderful tribute," Valerie Frangipane said.

Among the 2,996 people killed on 9/11, three from Lyndhurst are mourned,

  • Kenneth Grouzalis, 56
  • Myung-woo Lee, 41
  • Craig Damian Lilore, 30
Gino Calvi, 34, a former resident, also died that day.
