Equinox Trainer On His Way To Fitness Stardom

DUTCHESS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Dennis Codrington seizes opportunities. Whether it’s working as a top-level trainer for Equinox in Manhattan or making a daring subway rescue, the Poughkeepsie native is not afraid to take chances.

Codrington, a 2007 graduate of Spackenkill High, and his girlfriend, Maria Callanta, recently released their second video for Equinox. The first video, released last winter, uses a ViPR (Vitality, Performance and Reconditioning), a weighted hollow tube.

Codrington and Callanta, who also lived in Dutchess before moving to Manhattan, were among the first trainers at Equinox on 92nd Street in Manhattan to work with ViPR. After using it for nearly a year, the couple was asked to appear in an Equinox video.

“We started playing with the tool; no direction or perfectly manicured program; just unorganized fun,’’ Codrington said. “Eventually we got so good with the tool that we began flawlessly seeming movements together.”

Even someone as fit as Codrington -- the former Spackenkill football and track star is a Tier 4 coach at Equinox, the highest rank in the company -- found the ViPR increased strength and efficiency.

“Working with the ViPR helped me learn and reinforce new movement patterns that improved the synergy between my skin, muscle and bones,” he said. I would never advocate one tool or methodology over another. A well rounded program will employ the benefits of both traditional strength exercises and loaded 3D movement. “

Codrington earned his degree from SUNY Cortland and studied for a year at Ballarat University in Australia. He has worked at Equinox for nearly four years.

Codrington has seen a lot working and living in Manhattan. In 2013, he and two other men rescued a young man who fell on to the subway tracks at Columbus Circle. Codrington and the other men hoisted the main to safety as an incoming train raced toward them.

“It was just a spur of the moment decision,’’ he said. “It went by so quickly. My plan was not tell anybody about it. The next day, people were coming up to me and thanking me. It was very overwhelming. People all over the city recognized me.”
