WALLINGTON, N.J. — Laura Bonk always loved doing makeup but wasn't sure how to make a career out of it. Now she sells makeup online out of her Wallington home.
She uses a Facebook group , Laura's Beauty Bar, to connect with people around Bergen County.
Her interest in makeup has persisted for a long time.
"As a high school student I was doing my mom’s makeup."
She sells products through Younique , a cosmetics company that allows people to gain customers and make commission on sales.
Bonk has not made the transition to full-time makeup work just yet. She currently works as a physical education teacher at an elementary school in Garfield, but said she'd be interested in focusing entirely on cosmetics.
"There are people selling Younique and that’s all they do," Bonk said.
In the future, Bonk hopes to host an in-person event that would allow her followers to see products they're interested. She compared the vibe to a "wine and cheese" party but with cosmetics.
The date for that event is tentatively planned for mid-January to early-February but the details may change.
Bonk enjoys the field because of her genuine interest, but she also believes that makeup can boost a person's self-confidence.
"For people with bad acne that have a good coverup they feel better going out in public," Bonk said. "You feel better walking out knowing that you feel pretty."
