DVLovers: Burt, Clair Hoyt of North Arlington

NORTH ARLINGTON, N.J.- Burt and Clair Hoyt of North Arlington will celebrate 29 years of marriage in August.

But by the couple's account, it hasn't always been easy.

"It was a rocky road," Burt said. "We ended up in marriage counseling for 18 months. That's what saved our marriage.

"If you're not willing to work on it, it's not going to last."

"But we took the time to fix what we needed to fix," Clair added. "Now we don't take each other for granted."

Together they have two children: Jessica, 24, and Christopher, 17. 

As a group, they enjoy going down the shore and riding jet skis or taking family vacations. 

"You've got to have fun with all the stress of every day life," said Burt, a volunteer firefighter who works for KPMG in Montvale. 

"We look to each other to be each other's support system," said Clair, a special education teacher in Lyndhurst. 

It doesn't hurt to keep the mood light, either.

"Humor plays a big part in it," Burt said. 

"He's got a wicked, dry sense of humor. He always makes me laugh, even when I don't want to laugh," Clair said.
