NORTH ARLINGTON, N.J. — The most festive North Arlington community members can plug in their holiday decorations until Dec. 16 for this year's borough contest.
Judges from the recreation department will patrol North Arlington searching for the best decorations. Participants need not register, they only have to display their hard work through the deadline.
Jimmy Hermmann, North Arlington recreation director, said he and nine members of the department will divide the borough into sections and search for the best decorations.
"It's an extremely subjective process," Hermmann told Daily Voice. "It doesn't mean the most lights or blow-up items on the lawn."
The winner comes down to which display best shows holiday spirit, he said.
The annual contest has taken place for the past 25 to 30 years, Hermmann said. There are sometimes repeat winners, but it can come down to anyone.
The winner receives a visit from the judging committee Dec. 17. They will ring the doorbell and give a sign to the winner to place in their yard announcing their victory.
Hermmann said the contest mostly comes down to pride. It's also a thank you from the borough for making the neighborhood festive, he said.
"We've literally had people crying to our recreation commissioners that ring the doorbell," Hermmann said. "They are just so genuinely excited. We've had people laughing and saying 'what?' We've had the full spectrum of reactions from residents."
