LYNDHURST, N.J. — Lyndhurst Mayor Robert Giangeruso surprised longtime resident Sadie Angela Mugavero on her 97th birthday at the Colonial Diner on Monday.

"I'm so overwhelmed, but happy," said Mugavero, who walked into the diner to find Giangeruso holding a bouquet of flowers and a framed proclamation in her honor.

The surprise was planned by Mugavero's longtime friend Cathy Stensgaard, who arranged to have the mayor meet Mugavero at the diner.

Mugavero moved to Lyndhurst from Manhattan when she was 10 years old in 1927. She graduated from Lyndhurst High School in 1938 and had a long career working first for the Woolworth Company and later for Equity Savings and Loan

She has lived in her home on Orient Way for 87 years.
