LYNDHURST, N.J. -- The 200 Club of Bergen County last month honored Lyndhurst Police Officer Michael Keane for rescuing passengers from a derailed Amtrak train this past spring.
Keane and his fiancee, Courtney Keegan of North Arlington, were on the Amtrak No. 188 train that derailed on May 13 in Philadelphia.
The crash killed eight and injured more than 200 -- the nation’s deadliest train accident in nearly seven years.
Ironically, Keane was on his way back from a Unity Bike tour to help raise awareness and funds for the expansion, maintenance and preservation of the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C.
After ensuring his fiancee was safe, Keane went back into the train to help other passengers escape.
The 200 Club honored Keane with a 2015 J. Fletcher Creamer, Sr. Valor Award during its 30th anniversary dinner on Oct. 7 at the Venetian in Garfield.
