Police have recovered $200,000 in jewelry and cash taken in a brazen holdup at Tony’s Jeweler’s on Main Street in Clifton just before noon Monday, a law enforcement source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Children were kept inside both Jefferson schools in Lyndhurst as a dragnet of officers from various departments closed in on one of the gunmen, who police said had raced off on foot and was caught by a Clifton cop under a pool deck on Riverside Avenue.

The second apparently fled in what may have been a waiting car, they said.

“We asked school officials to keep the kids inside. We were concerned for their safety,” Lyndhurst Police Chief James O’Connor told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “It was not a lockdown. It was what we call a shut-in. We weren’t sure whether these guys were armed or not.”

Turns out they were when they burst into Tony Jeweler’s on Main Avenue at 11:15 a.m. wearing ski masks, pointed weapons at employees and smashed display cases to get at the goods. They also took an undetermined amount of cash.
