Alerted that a bogus $100 bill was used on a $9 purchase at the River Road ShopRite, Officers Geovanny Buitron, John Rovetto, Justin DiGuglielmo, Juan Rodriguez and Brian Goodson stopped a Hyundai Elantra on River Road and Maple Avenue, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

The officers ordered all five occupants from the car, then found $350 in counterfeit currency -- three hundreds and a fifty -- as well as nearly $170 in items believed bought with funny money, he said.

Two more bogus hundred-dollar bills were recovered at ShopRite, the sergeant said.

Police also seized nearly $2,000 in genuine money that they believe was change from purchases with the counterfeit cash, he said.

Charged with conspiracy to commit theft and receiving stolen property were:

  • Marie Shaw, 43, of Allentown, PA;
  • Sade Ross, 30, of Yonkers;
  • Ronell Charles, Tiffany Butterfield, both 20, and Dominique Brown, 31, all of the Bronx.

Ross and Brown also were charged with possession of a forgery device.

Butterfield, who had arrest warrants out of Somerset and Morris counties, as well as Rocklaway, was also charged with being a leader of organized crime.

She was sent to the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.

Metzler said police believe the group was reponsible for passing or trying to pass counterfeit bills in other towns. Additional charges were expected.
