Authorities were withholding certain details while the victim's next of kin was notified, Grewal said.
Daily Voice broke the news that a possible suspect was in custody after police and homicide detectives converged at the Riverview Gardens at 1 Garden Terrace in the early afternoon.
Local police responded to a call for a welfare check from the complex's management and found the couple in the apartment, Grewal said.
The wife had been dead "at least a day," he said.
"This was a domestic violence incident," the prosecutor said. "They'd been married for a time."
The Bergen County Sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Identification joined Major Crimes Unit detectives from Grewal's office and borough police at the scene.
