YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: North Arlington police tracked down a Lodi man who they said fled a traffic stop, driving at high speed into oncoming traffic.
The officer who’d stopped him at Chestnut Street and the Belleville Turnpike for having a loud muffler was walking toward the car when 28-year-old Carlos J. Colon “turned, made eye contact and floored the accelerator” at 8:18 p.m. Saturday, Capt. John Hern told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
The officer got back into his car and chased the blue Acura, which veered into oncoming traffic at high speed as it crossed the bridge into Belleville, so he pulled back, Hern said.
No one was at the registered owner’s home when detectives went there. They did find two stolen cars in the building parking lot, Hern noted.
Neighbors told the owner that police had been there, and she went to Belleville headquarters, the captain said.
It turned out she’d loaned the car to Colon, he said.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant that they forwarded to their Lodi colleagues, who Hern said picked up Colon on Saturday.
He remained held on $40,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with eluding.
Colon, who was also wanted on a warrant out of Newark, was charged with several motor vehicle violations, the captain said.
