The organization of citizens augments township police by providing crowd and traffic control and a visible presence to help improve safety and security in the community.

The unit also provides protection and security for schools, parks, recreational fields and other municipal locations and may be called into action for other assistance.

The presence of the auxiliary, in uniform or on patrol in marked police vehicles, has been proven to reduce vandalism and other crimes in the community, authorities said.

All Lyndhurst Auxiliary officers are required to attend and successfully complete a 52-hour training program, beginning in March, at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah.

There they will receive specialized training in first aid, traffic control and patrol, among other functions.

All auxiliary officers are outfitted with a patrol uniform and will be required to work a regular patrol schedule.

Not only do members help protect their community — the volunteer position helps those seeking careers in law enforcement.
