In Lyndhurst, two men ordered a clerk to open a register and hand over cash at gunpoint, police said.
Lyndhurst police said the men took money the clerks were carrying, as well, during the 11:20 p.m. robbery at the Delta Gas Station on Riverside Avenue.
They also forced one of them to lie on the ground while they searched behind the counter for more money, Capt. John J. Valente said.
They eventually fled with about $1,000, he said.
Victims in the Lyndhurst holdup described the bandits as dark skinned, one with a medium build, nearly 6 feet tall, and wearing a black jacket, checked shirt, blue jeans, black gloves, black half mask and a furry winter hat with side flaps.
The other was nearly as tall but heavy-set, wearing a gray sweatshirt and pants, black gloves, black mask and a black winter skull cap.
Their getaway car, like the gun, was described as silver. Police in both towns said it was an early-2000 Subaru station wagon.
In North Arlington, the second man got out out of the vehicle on Canterbury Avenue, approached a motorist parking his car and took his wallet at gunpoint, police said.
