UPDATE: North Arlington Police Chief Louis Ghione personally ended the manhunt for a suspect caught on surveillance camera passing bogus $100 bills after following him into Lyndhurst this afternoon.
A store clerk told a dispatcher that he’d just rejected an attempt by 49-year-old Richard Rivers of Roselle to pass a phony bill.
So Ghione took matters into his own hands, arresting Rivers and summoning his Lyndhurst colleagues.
Rivers was carrying three fake $100 bills, Capt. John Hearn said. He was also wanted on a warrant out of Freehold, he said.
The chief spotted Rivers on Ridge Road just before noon today, then had his desk call area businesses after the suspect headed into several Lyndhurst stores, Hearn said.
Police had been looking for Rivers after he was caught on surveillance video using counterfeit Benjamins at a local 7-Eleven.
North Arlington and Lyndhurst police charged Rivers, then turned him over to authorities in Freehold on the warrants, the captain said.
