NORTH ARLINGTON, N.J. -- (UPDATE) A sleeping driver escaped without serious injury after her Jeep downed a utility pole before dawn Tuesday, closing a major North Arlington roadway for several hours.

The driver "is believed to have fallen asleep," Police Chief Scott Hedenberg told Daily Voice. "Her vehicle then struck a utility pole, which came down and blocked the roadway."

The Cherokee driver wasn't injured seriously, the chief said.

Schuyler Avenue behind Holy Cross Cemetery remained closed in both directions between Noel Drive and the Belleville Turnpike while the pole was replaced.

It was reopened around 8:45 a.m.
