WALLINGTON, N.J. -- A car pulled from the Passaic River late Saturday afternoon contained the body of Devorah Stubin, 22, of Passaic, Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino confirmed.

"The license plate matched hers," Saudino told Daily Voice just after 6:30 p.m.

"The family was notified," the sheriff said, adding, "It's been an awful two days."

Dive teams went into the Passaic River behind Wozniak Funeral Home on Midland Avenue after being summoned by emergency responders, the sheriff said. They found Stubin's silver sedan submerged in 10 feet of water, he told Daily Voice.

The funeral home owner had called police an hour or so earlier after finding damage to a fence and a piece of bumper, the sheriff said.

Fears immediately gripped those awaiting word of the results that the body inside was that of Stubin, who suffered from epilepsy.

Divers from Wallington, Lyndhurst, Garfield, Oradell and Mahwah converged behind the funeral home, along with the Bergen County Sheriff's Water Search and Recovery Team, just before 4:30 p.m. Teaneck's Box 54 also responded.

Volunteers from the Brooklyn South Safety Patrol unit flooded area streets in and around Maywood on Saturday. A New Jersey State Police chopper joined the search, coordinated from a command post at a vacant retail center at Essex Street and Maywood Avenue.

The safety patrol, made up of Orthodox Jewish volunteers, searches for missing children and provides other services for grieving parents. It came to international attention after coordinating a massive search for an 8-year-old Brooklyn boy who was later found killed.

Family, friends, emergency responders and volunteers who mobilized Friday night were distributing fliers door to door and posting them in businesses, expanding the search area into other towns, such as Hasbrouck Heights and Wood-Ridge.
