Six boys in all were in the a 2006 Toyota 4Runner, with a car containing three girls following, when the crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Bellgrove Drive at North Bayard Lane.

Several are members of the high school boys soccer team, which beat Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood earlier Saturday, Police Chief James Batelli told Daily Voice.

"There are a lot of leaves and tree limbs down and the roads were wet," Batelli said. "That probably played a role in it."

The victims were taken to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.

Two township police officers responding to the scene off Airmont Avenue were OK after one cruiser rear-ended the other, Batelli said.

It wasn't clear where the teens were headed.

"They were just driving around as far as we know at this point," the chief said.

Grewal formally announced Monday afternoon that detectives from his Fatal Accident Investigation Unit were looking into what caused a weekend crash (SEE: https://mahwah.dailyvoice.com/police-fire/prosecutors-office-probing-crash-that-killed-mahwah-high-school-student/686854/).
