Flames from the garage behind the Kingsland Avenue home extended to the rear living room, rendering it temporarily inhabitable for its two residents, after the blaze broke out just after 4 p.m., Fire Chief Joseph Roofe told Daily Voice.

Two neighboring homes sustained some heat damage, said Roofe, who commended his crew for "aggressively stopping the fire from doing more serious damage."

He declared the fire under control within 15 minutes.

The chief thanked borough police, as well as his North Arlington colleagues for mutual aid and those from East Rutherford for station coverage.
