Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino

Nicholas Guiterrez was recognized during a special K-9 demonstration at the Frank W. Gavlak School, during which several BCSO K-9 officers and their police dogs put on a demonstration.

The youngster also received a certificate of commendation from Sheriff Michael Saudino.

His winning entry will also be displayed on the BCSO website and Facebook page .

The contest was sponsored by Saudino and A&P during October and November 2011.

A panel of Sheriff’s Officers chose the top eligible entries from the more than 150 submissions, and representatives from A&P selected Nicholas.

Radar was bought thanks to a $5,000 donation from the supermarket chain.

He and his K-9 handler, Officer Joseph Cutrona, are currently enrolled in an intensive 26-week training program to learn basic drug detection and criminal apprehension skills.

Saudino said that his agency “maintains several widely recognized K-9 teams that assist BCSO and law enforcement agencies throughout the state in a broad range of tasks and situations.  Canine skills include explosives, narcotics, criminal apprehension, evidence search, tracking, tobacco detection, cell phone detection, cadaver location and recovery.”
