Officer David Norris was on assigned patrol in the wake of the break-ins when he heard a car alarm in the area of King and Strong streets just after 3:45 a.m., Lt. Shawn Kudlacik said.

The officer spotted 31-year-old David J. Washer walking away, then noticed another vehicle with its interior light on and glove compartment open, he said.

Norris backtracked and found Washer rummaging through a Kia paked in a Strong Street driveway, Kudlacik said. So he took Washer, of Newton, into custody.

Detectives discovered six other area car break-ins, for a total of nine burglary charges filed against Washer.

A judge ordered him held on $1,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail.
