EMERSON, N.J. -- ( UPDATE/OCT. 11 ) The ribbon was formally cut Wednesday at a 14-unit housing project in Emerson for military veterans with special needs.

American Legion Post 269 owns the Main Street building and is leasing it for a dollar a year to the non-profit Housing Development Corporation of Bergen County, which completed the renovations.

“We can never fully repay the men and women in our armed services who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect us," County Executive Jim Tedesco said, "But we have a moral obligation to make sure affordable homes are always within reach.”

Project funding was provided by the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (HMFA) and the Bergen County Division of Community Development, as well as the Housing Development Corps.

Donations of furnishings, time and money were made by the Bergen County Division of Veteran Services, American Legion Post 269, Catholic Charities, Making-It-Home, and corporate and non-profit sponsors.

"The men and women who have faithfully served our country deserve safe, affordable housing and community support as civilians, especially those who became disabled as a result of their service," said American Legion Post 162 Commander Zoltan Horvath of Hillsdale.
