LYNDHURST, N.J. — Babatunde Ojo started taking Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu at Lyndhurst's Savarese Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu Academy for self-defense but he found more than an appreciation for the martial art.
Ojo now teaches children's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes at Savarese on Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
He always had an interest in teaching kids and previously worked at Little Ivy Academy in Ridgewood doing just that, but found certain realities of the teaching world pushed him away from the profession.
However, his interest in education remains.
"I really care about education — for children to be molded to think in certain situations and carefully think about things," Ojo said.
He found a new avenue through his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes.
After practicing the martial art for two years, one of the professors at Savarese suggested Ojo teach his own class. The details quickly materialized and Ojo had a new outlet for his teaching interest.
"I’ll continue teaching BJJ as long as I can," Ojo said.
Savarese Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is located at 40 Park Ave in Lyndhurst. Kids courses are offered Monday through Thursday at 4 and 7 p.m. Ojo's classes are taught Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
