The one-year-old buck got excited as youngsters gathered near it around dismissal and forced his way through the closed window of the Beech Street school just after 3:30 p.m., they said.

The window didn't break.

"It went through the office and definitely shocked our staff in the office," Schools Supt. Oliver W. Stringham told reporters. "They acted remarkably."

The schools dean of students closed and locked his office door while admnistrators waited for Bergen County Animal Control officers -- and deer toppled a water coler and damaged a wall.

The tranquilized animal later was wrapped and wheeled to an animal control van.

Authorities said they planned to release the deer into the wild.
