Fugitive wanted in Clifton jewelry store heist surrenders

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A man wanted in a Clifton jewelry store holdup turned himself in to police this evening, CLIFFVIEW PILOT has learned. Detectives had been searching for Lester Hughes, 43, since capturing his brother, Rockman, in Lyndhurst an hour after the late Monday morning robbery of Tony’s Jewelers.

Although he originally had arranged to come in at 4 o’clock, Lester Hughes’ arrival was inexplicably delayed until nearly 7:30, a law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the case told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

It’s unclear whether his girlfriend, 48-year-old Debra Viscel, who police said was driving the getaway car, would be with him.

Rockman Hughes bailed out and ran after the black SUV got into an accident during a police chase immediately following the Monday morning holdup.

Although Lester Hughes has no state prison record in New Jersey, his brother has spent a couple of years behind bars, in one instance for eluding police and resisting arrest. Viscel also served time.
