State authorities need to figure what to do about conditions that allowed a drunk driver to plow into a pack of pedestrians trying to cross Route 120 — one of them carrying a 21-month-old — after a soccer game at the new Meadowlands stadium.
Yes, someone spotted the driver’s silver Acura and he was later arrested at a Burger King in Wallington following the midnight incident after Mexico and Ecuador tied Friday night.
But what was this group doing on Route 120 to begin with? Authorities say they didn’t want to deal with the crowded pedestrian bridge.
Well, guess what, folks? It’s either time to build another bridge, time to better divide the highway from pedestrians, or time to post officers along Route 120. Take your pick, or come up with another idea.
Focusing on the drinking that goes on in the stadium doesn’t address the sheer stupidity of people — on carrying an infant — trying to cross a busy highway at night.
Nine people in all had to go to the hospital, including the youngster. One of the victims was initially reported in critical condition but seems to be OK.
The driver, Frank Morocho of the Bronx, is charged with drunk driving assault by auto and leaving the scene of an accident.
