Claudio Toribio, 36, of Brentwood, N.Y., and 35-year-old Norkelis Hilario of Brooksville, Fla., are charged with “trafficking in personal identifying information pertaining to another,” as well as theft.

Both were released on $7,500 bail pending Municipal Court appearances.

A township resident called police at 2:50 this afternoon to report that both were looking in peoples’ mailboxes along Washington Avenue, Chief Randy Ciocco said.

Corporal Saverio Fasciano and Officer Heather Castronova checked the area and found the couple parked in a car on Washington Avenue.

As they approached the car, Toribio tossed a piece of mail belonging to a township resident out the window, the chief said.

With backup help from other officers, they took the pair into custody.

“This incident is yet another example of the lengths that thieves and scam artists will go to while targeting unsuspecting citizens,” Ciocco said.

In Lyndhurst earlier this month, a resident led police to two men found fishing through mailboxes for tax refund checks, in what has become a federal investigation into bogus IRS returns.

The pair told police they’d been paid $100 a day to pull IRS checks from mailboxes at specific addresses.

The checks weren’t made out to residents living there (SEE: Lyndhurst resident leads authorities to suspected IRS refund check scam).
