LYNDHURST, N.J.– Lyndhurst High School sophomore Alyssa Robalino far exceeded not only her personal best but the school record long jump at the Red Littler Bergen County Championships.
"I didn't think I would jump that well since I haven't long jumped since freshman year – and only 13 feet then," said Robalino, 15.
But she soared to a jump of 17 1/4 – eclipsing the 16-foot, 6-inch record held by her coach, Kimberly Hykey – to finish third in Division C.
"It's exciting," said Robalino, who also competes in the triple jump and the 100- and 200-meter events. "It's a high point in my track career for sure."
Seeing an athlete she coached break her record didn't make Hykey upset – "it was more meaningful to actually be there to see Alyssa's excitement and to be there to share it," said Hykey, a 2004 LHS graduate. "You want to see the kid's having fun."
Hykey set her record 12 years ago at the county championships, winning Division C.
